Letters of Interest Example #1: Internal Medicine
Dear [Program Director’s Name],
I am writing to express my strong interest in the internal medicine residency program at the University of Michigan.
Following medical school at Madras Medical College in India, I spent two years studying cardiac regenerative medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine Cardiovascular Research Institute. My work in this area has already resulted in three oral presentations, and I am currently preparing two manuscripts—one of which I will be the first author.
Balancing my rewarding research pursuits, I have accomplished six months of diverse clinical rotations across internal medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, and critical care in New Jersey. As a non-visa requiring IMG, I have completed both USMLE Step 1 (262) and Step 2 (258).
The groundbreaking advancements and research focus at the University of Michigan’s Cardiovascular Division deeply resonate with my career goals. I’m confident that my academic and clinical background, along with my dedication to research, make me an excellent fit for this internal medicine program.
Thank you for considering my application. I would be honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the University of Michigan’s legacy of excellence in medical research, education and patient care. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my qualifications further.
Sincerely,
Your Name
Letters of Interest Example #2: Surgery
Dear Dr. Anges,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my interest in pursuing general surgery residency at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
After graduating from Pontifical Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia, I completed three years of general surgery residency at Colombia National University Hospital before moving to the U.S. to join my fiancé. Since relocating, I have been working as a researcher in the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), performing surgeries on animals and leading projects on innovative resuscitation protocols for hypovolemic shock treatment.
During my rotations across several surgical specialties in the U.S., I have strengthened my clinical skills and gained valuable exposure to the U.S. healthcare system, which builds on the extensive surgical exposure from my residency in my home country. I have board scores of 355 (STEP1), 260 (STEP2), and 245 (STEP 3).
My ultimate goal is to become a community general surgeon in South Carolina. I firmly believe that the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center’s general surgery residency program is the ideal environment for me to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge, and experiences to realize this aspiration.
I would be honored to be considered for a position in your program and would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the academic and clinical environment at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Alex Smith
