Updated October 2026
As someone who’s completed both UWorld and AMBOSS twice during Step 1 and Step 2 CK preparation and guided countless students through both, I wrote this guide from real experience rather than marketing copy. Choosing the right QBank can make or break your Step prep. UWorld, AMBOSS, and Synapse are all excellent, but each serves a slightly different purpose. While UWorld and AMBOSS are the established QBanks, Synapse focuses on efficiency and structured learning. This helps students manage the large volume of traditional question banks without getting overwhelmed, especially now that Step 1 is pass/fail.

- UWorld occasionally runs promotions or bundle offers, especially around Step 1 and Step 2 CK season. Please verify current pricing on their product page.
- Synapse features a discount and support structure built directly into our ecosystem. The 3- and 6-month Step 1 plans include $50 and $75 off the Step 1 Bootcamp. The 6-month plan also adds up to $300 off tutoring and access to the Biostatistics course. Step 2 CK and Step 3 plans include $100 (3-month) or $125 (6-month) off the matching bootcamp, and their 6-month plans add the Biostatistics and Abstract courses. Additionally, they offer a free 40-question sample set for students to explore the platform and interface before purchasing.
⚖️ Refunds, Pauses & Extensions
- UWorld: One reset with the 180-day and longer plans. Refund and pause options are limited, so always double-check before purchase. Extensions are available for an additional fee.
- AMBOSS: You can pause or cancel your membership at any time, and your stats remain saved. Trials end automatically without charge.
- Synapse: Full refund within 5 days if you’ve completed fewer than 100 questions. There is also a pass guarantee: if you complete the QBank with a 90%+ average but still fail the exam, you are eligible for a refund.
If you’re comparing by numbers alone, UWorld has the most questions for each Step, and AMBOSS has the lowest 6-month price, with one purchase covering all three Steps. But more questions isn’t the goal. Synapse QBank is built for efficiency across Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3. Its high-yield question pool is one you can finish and review in far less time, with support no other QBank offers: daily live tutor sessions, a 24/7 AI tutor and built-in flashcards.
Content Focus & Learning Depth
Both UWorld and AMBOSS cover nearly all of the high-yield topics tested on the USMLE exams, but their approach differs slightly.
- UWorld focuses on the most frequently tested, high-yield material. Its explanations highlight the important clinical points and reasoning you need for the exam. Everything is clear, direct, and easy to follow, which is perfect for learning and retaining the essentials.
- AMBOSS offers equally strong coverage of high-yield material but also includes extra layers of detail that help you understand how conditions connect. This makes it especially good for students who want to strengthen their overall understanding while still focusing on exam-relevant knowledge.
- Synapse also focuses on the most frequently tested, high-yield material to help you learn and retain the essentials. It builds learning depth using a step-by-step interactive system. It features a tiered setup that groups questions by difficulty so you master the basics before moving to harder concepts. It also includes built-in AI to break down complex explanations on demand and pre-made flashcards to test your memory right after each question. In addition, if you have any questions you’re struggling with, you can discuss them with a tutor during the daily 1-hour live sessions to get clear answers.
In short, UWorld teaches you how to think like the exam, AMBOSS helps you understand why the answers are what they are, and Synapse QBank covers what Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3 test most in far less time, with tiered questions, AI and live tutor support.

Question Style & Flexibility
AMBOSS’s question style is also close to the real USMLE and NBME format, especially in its medium-difficulty range. The stems are very similar in length and structure to the real exam, with comparable question phrasing, wording style, and answer choice patterns.
AMBOSS’s harder (4–5 hammer) questions can feel trickier than the real exam, while UWorld’s are calibrated very close to NBME difficulty.
Synapse’s question style mirrors the real USMLE and NBME format. The stems are very similar in length and structure to the actual exam, with comparable question phrasing, wording style, and answer choice patterns that demand multi-step reasoning.
For this reason, Synapse takes a major win for question realism, perfectly capturing the multi-step clinical reasoning required on test day.
UWorld is known for clear explanations, with crisp tables and figures that stay focused on high-yield content.
Synapse QBank explanations are just as clear and built to teach. Each one walks you step by step to the right answer, explains why every wrong choice is incorrect, and ends with a short “bottom line” summary and simple tables that recap the key facts. Questions are also tagged “Must Know,” so you can see what matters most. Because the bank is smaller, you can study every explanation in depth and still have time to review before your exam, which makes Synapse a strong first question bank to learn from.
In terms of customization, AMBOSS lets you build question blocks on specific topics and even filter by difficulty, ranging from 1 to 5 hammers.
→ For those short on time, focus on 2–3 hammer questions that best replicate the exam’s tone and challenge level. For a full pass, go from 1 to 4 hammers. UWorld is organized by system and major topic only, with no difficulty filter. You can select up to 40 questions per block, while AMBOSS allows unlimited questions per session.
Synapse gives you a 5-tier difficulty filter, similar to AMBOSS, but limits each block to 40 questions like UWorld. It also includes unique features that let you build custom blocks using specific question IDs for targeted review, or create shared blocks to study the exact same questions with friends or tutors.

Library & Reference Tools
- AMBOSS features one of the most comprehensive medical libraries available, included with every subscription. You can toggle between “High-Yield” and “Detailed” modes depending on how deep you want to go, whether you want quick lookups or full revisions. The ability to click directly from a question explanation into a full library article makes AMBOSS uniquely efficient for quick clarification. It particularly shines during Step 2 CK preparation, when you need clinically integrated, management-focused content.
- UWorld now includes its Medical Library with every Qbank plan. These shorter, focused articles emphasize pathophysiology, key disease mechanisms, and high-yield visuals. It’s especially valuable during Step 1 prep, where understanding mechanisms matters most.
- Synapse does not have a text-based textbook library. Instead, it includes a media library with every plan. This tool focuses strictly on visuals, letting you browse and review all the medical images, diagrams, and charts used across the platform in one place.

Self-Assessments
Self-assessments are where all three platforms show their predictive power.
- AMBOSS provides one self-assessment each for Step 1 and Step 2 CK (none for Step 3), priced at $49.99 USD. Though often underrated, it’s quite predictive and features well-crafted, exam-style content.
- UWorld includes up to three self-assessments for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and two for Step 3, depending on your subscription length.
They can also be purchased separately for $50 USD each. - Synapse now offers self-assessments for Step 1 and Step 2 CK.
For Step 1, the UWSAs are decent but less essential since the exam is now pass/fail, making NBMEs a better gauge.
For Step 2 CK, NBMEs are the gold standard; UWSA 2 is a useful extra practice exam once you have used them.

Study Tools & Accessibility
Synapse QBank has flashcards built into every question:
- There are 4,700+ pre-made cards for Step 1, 5,000+ for Step 2 CK and 3,000+ for Step 3, so you can test yourself on each explanation right after you review it.
- You can also make your own cards from any question and import your existing Anki decks, so your review stays in one place.
- Saved flashcard decks are available offline.
- Its study planner lets you set daily targets for questions and flashcards, track outside resources such as our 7-Day Live Course alongside your QBank work, and calculates your daily pace to keep you on track for exam day.
UWorld includes ReadyDecks and pre-made flashcards (2,000+ for Step 1 and 2,500+ for Step 2 CK). Its study planner comes with the 180-day and longer plans. Your cards stay inside UWorld, so you need an active subscription to use them.
AMBOSS offers an official Anki add-on that shows AMBOSS library definitions and images inside your Anki cards, and links your cards to related AMBOSS QBank sessions.
🎥 Watch this video: “Step 2 in 2 Months: Resources and Plan 2026” a study plan and schedule to ace the Step 2 CK exam in a short timeframe.
Mobile Apps
- AMBOSS allows full offline access to both its library and Qbank, syncing highlights and notes seamlessly once back online.
- UWorld, in contrast, requires an active internet connection for most functions and does not offer true offline access.
- Synapse offers full offline QBank access through its desktop and mobile app.
If you travel or study on the go, Synapse and AMBOSS both offer offline access, while UWorld needs an internet connection.
Additional Features & Tools
- AMBOSS includes a built-in score predictor and performance analytics with fine topic breakdowns.
- UWorld’s biostatistics add-on ($25) is useful for Step 2 CK and Step 3.
- AMBOSS’s high-yield study plans (Ethics, QI, Biostatistics) combine readings and questions for guided learning.
- UWorld’s ReadyDecks + Study Planner combo makes block scheduling and flashcard review easier.
- Synapse provides a basic performance dashboard to track your scores and question usage, though it lacks a built-in score predictor. Additionally, it features a unique central hub that collects all of your AI tutoring conversations from questions into one place for easy review. Through Synapse AI, the platform also links each topic you review to similar or related questions within the QBank. Synapse AI also has an interactive audio mode, so you can keep studying on the go. Synapse also includes a Study Plans section with focused question collections organized by topic, difficulty and stage of preparation.
- Synapse’s study planner combines your daily question and flashcard targets with outside resources to manage your daily study pacing.
Interface & User Experience
While UWorld’s old interface was cleaner and widely preferred, its newer redesign has added complexity that some users find less intuitive. In contrast, AMBOSS currently offers a simpler and more streamlined interface, making it easier for quick navigation and integrated learning.
Synapse takes a highly modern and minimalist approach, providing a very clean, uncluttered layout that keeps navigation simple and distraction-free.
Choosing by Topic Strength
All three question banks let you filter questions by topic. We recommend starting with our 7-day live course and then Synapse for focused, efficient preparation, then using your NBME self-assessment results to identify any remaining gaps. If you need more practice in a particular area, use UWorld or AMBOSS to target those topics without having to complete another entire question bank.
AMBOSS is particularly strong in patient safety, quality improvement, and selected ethics and communication topics. These sections offer thorough questions and explanations, making them useful for additional practice in areas emphasized on Step 2 CK.
Both AMBOSS and Synapse offer useful study decks (different from regular question blocks) focused on topics such as ethics and biostatistics, along with dedicated decks for review during the final one to two weeks before your exam.
Take the guesswork out of your prep with Synapse. Join our daily live sessions, track your progress with our unique study planner, and study with total peace of mind.

How to Study the Question Bank
Practice in Timed Mode
Aim for three timed blocks a day, with 20 questions in 30 minutes per block. Solve them as if you were taking the real exam, so you can practice managing your time and answering questions under exam conditions.
Start System by System
Begin with questions from one system at a time to build your understanding. Switch to random blocks after you finish the first round of the question bank to practice moving between topics, as you will on the exam.
Take Time to Review the Explanations
After each block (or after your daily 3 blocks), go through the explanations very carefully. Take time to understand why the correct answer is right and why the other choices are wrong even when you answered correctly. Pay attention to the clues that distinguish similar conditions so you can work through the differential on your next question.
Use the flashcards incorporated into Synapse QBank to test your understanding of the explanations. Make them part of your daily review, especially for concepts you missed or tend to forget.
Try Ghost Mode
In Ghost Mode, try to work out the answer before you look at the answer choices. It’s a good way to check whether you can recognize the concept and reach the answer without hints from the options.
Join a Daily Live Tutor Session
Synapse is the only QBank with daily live tutor sessions. Bring a question you found difficult, talk through your reasoning, and get an explanation from a tutor in real time. Live sessions are included with the three- and six-month plans.
FAQs
1. Which Qbank is cheaper: UWorld or AMBOSS?
AMBOSS is generally cheaper. Its 12-month plan costs $448, while UWorld’s 360-day plan is $579 with the Medical Library included (prices as of Oct 2026).
2. Which Qbank has more questions?
UWorld. It offers around 3,600 Step 1 and 4,250 Step 2 CK questions versus 2,840 and 4,100 in AMBOSS. Synapse has a smaller pool, offering 1,500+ questions each for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and 800+ for Step 3.
3. Which QBank’s questions are more similar to the real USMLE?
Synapse QBank questions match the NBME and real exam style in stem length, structure and multi-step reasoning. AMBOSS is also close to the NBME style, while UWorld questions are slightly more direct.
4. Which has better explanations?
UWorld’s explanations are more concise and high-yield; AMBOSS’s are deeper and linked to its library for extended understanding.
5. Should I use more than one QBank?
Not at the start. For Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3, we recommend starting with our 7-day live course for your Step, then one bank, Synapse QBank, and studying it well. Its high-yield questions cover what the exams test most, so you can finish the bank and still have time to review it before your exam. Daily live tutor sessions and a 24/7 AI tutor help you with the questions you get stuck on.
Once you’ve finished Synapse, take several NBME self-assessments. If they show gaps, add targeted questions from UWorld or AMBOSS in those areas, rather than starting a second full bank.
6. Does Synapse cover Step 2 CK or Step 3?
Synapse now has banks for Step 1, Step 2 CK (about 1,500 questions) and Step 3 (about 800 questions), as of Oct 2026.

- Daily Live Tutoring: A daily 1-hour live tutor session to ask questions in real time.
- 24/7 AI Coaching: An interactive AI tutor built into the questions, paired with a central dashboard that saves all your past coaching conversations in one place.
- Smart Topic Linking: Synapse AI automatically links your current topic to similar or related questions across the QBank to reinforce your understanding.
- Integrated Study Planner: A customizable tool that lets you log external resources like Pathoma or Sketchy alongside your QBank work while automatically calculating your daily pacing.
- Direct Anki Import: The ability to import your own Anki decks via .apkg or JSON files directly into the platform

Conclusion & Recommendations
Your ideal QBank choice depends on which exam you are facing.
For Step 1, start with the 7-Day Step 1 Live Course, then Synapse QBank, the most efficient choice for the pass/fail format. It has a high-yield question pool and interactive AI tools to help you retain core concepts without overwhelming yourself, leaving UWorld or AMBOSS for targeted practice if your NBME self-assessments reveal specific gaps. Synapse’s daily live tutor sessions add regular support to your study routine, helping you stay motivated and work through questions you might otherwise spend time trying to resolve on your own.
For Step 2 CK, we recommend completing the 7-Day Step 2 CK Live Course, then working through Synapse QBank over the next 3–4 weeks (about 60 questions a day). Take multiple NBME self-assessments to track your progress and determine what to do next. Depending on your scores, you may benefit from reviewing Synapse again or adding targeted practice from UWorld or AMBOSS in areas where you need more questions.
For Step 3, where most students aim to pass rather than achieve a high score, we strongly recommend starting with Synapse QBank. Use self-assessments to evaluate your readiness. Consistent results comfortably above the passing threshold, or at your target score, can help guide your decision to take the exam, alongside adequate preparation for CCS cases. If you need more practice, supplement with questions from UWorld or AMBOSS.
We hope this detailed comparison helps you feel focused, confident, and ready to choose the best QBank strategy to crush your upcoming board exams.
